We were recently contacted by an avid Grateful Dead fan wanting to get their Illadelph Glass beaker waterpipe customized. They requested to have ‘something done with Jerry [Garcia]’s face and a tribute to the Grateful Dead music’ but also requested for something fresh and out of the ordinary. He came to us with a budget of $1200 and wanted the final product to be a surprise. With this budget, we knew we could create something from scratch that no other Grateful Dead fan had ever seen before. We were not just going to use standardized Gratedful Dead imagery for this one, we had to draw something up on our own.
Our customization masterminds Ian (@typeisdesign on Instagram) and Mike (@scratchedglasswork on Instagram) hit the drawing board and spent hours creating and scrapping ideas until they were satisfied with a concept.
After designing and laying out a multitude of designs, the duo of artists came up with the grand idea. What better way to tribute Jerry and the Grateful Dead music other than engraving Jerry’s face on the backside of the beaker encapsulated by song titles by the band? But how many song titles? How will we choose which titles to put onto the piece?
And the grand conclusion? Why not put EVERY SINGLE Grateful Dead song title ever released by the band all over the beaker? And that is what we did. The project took several days of work to design and engrave and we were able to complete the project under budget for a total of $1000 and delivered the piece a week ahead of the estimated completion time.
A custom engraved Philadelphia themed Illadelph Glass beaker waterpipe we did for a Glass Concierge customer. We encapsulated the Philadelphia's history, culture, sports teams, and landmarks.
